Its name has nothing to do with its shape, as it has been explained, and it is of little importance in the end!

This is the etymology of the word “horizon” because in ancient times on the top of Cape Ichthys, dominated  the fortress that controlled the surrounding sea area . From the Middle Ages to the modern history, the region was colonized and plundered based on the commercial interests of each era.

The earthquake of the 6th century BC submerged the center of the coastal – flourishing – city of ancient Pheia and on the ruins of its  Acropolis, a fortress was built by the Roman colonists.

It was renovated from the Byzantines and today it is supposed to lie in dense vegetation due to the disagreement of private neighboring olive groves and the archaeological service and to remain unused and inaccessible. One can approach the ruins from the mountain but the steep slope combined with the cottonwoods and bushes poses a danger to anyone interested especially the ignorant of mountaineering!
