General Information

At the top of Mount Katakolo, just one kilometer from the port, dominates the Lighthouse with its small house and a permanent guard from the competent service. For a century now, its light has been accompanying the ships that approach the harbor at the ancient Cape of Ichthys, at the edge of which the village was built and thus was named Katakolo, which means “the back of the cape”!

The lighthouse was built in 1865 with the height of its stone tower reaching 9 meters and its focal height 45 meters. It consists of four rooms, which the lighthouse keepers used as bedrooms, as well as the turret, which houses the lighthouse mechanism. By a recent decision of the Ministry of Culture, the lighthouse of Katakolo was classified as a preserved and newest historical monument of the region.

Katakolo mountain has bright red soil and has a variety of beauties and has been inhabited by families of shepherds and breeders of the area for over two centuries!

In the estate of a well-known family on the mountain, there is also the volcano, which has the appearance of a burnt channel and empties into the sea, emerging bubbles and the intense smell that is a characteristic in areas with volcanic energy. There are also deposits of hydrocarbons and natural gas.

The rocks of the mountain are evaporites, a mixture of mud, red soil and sulfur that exists in the area. Hence the strong smell in various parts of the port! It is an ideal place for walks and picnics. The plantation in the area is bushy and there is a wide variety of wild flowers that, when Spring comes, fill its slopes with a feast of colors! At the beginning of 2000, the area acquired paths with lampposts, giving another, extremely picturesque, dimension to its foothills. Explore it…!
